Selling Your Lladros - Part IV - On Line Auctions

Selling your Lladro through an on line auction (such as eBay) has advantages and disadvantages and requires you to add value. Let's explore.

Selling at auction incurs risks. First, your item (Lladro) might be purchase for a penny when you want $100.00. In the on line auction arena there is a school of thought that starting at a penny attracts more interest and bidder competition. While this may be a good strategy if you are selling hundreds of items, it might be considered very risky is you are only selling one.

On eBay, for instance, you can have a reserve price. This protects you, the seller, from selling too low (your assessment of too low), but it costs you more to list your item. Also, it may drive bidders away because you have a secret reserve price (a reserve price is not shown on the listing).

You also need to create the listing. This is a non-trivial activity that requires you to use the computer software of eBay to mechanically create the listing (you spend time learning how to do it) and develop the copy describing your item in an interesting and enticing way. Also, since the Internet is a visual medium, you need to include photographs - good photographs. If you don't do these things well, people (1) won't find your listing and (2) won't bid or will bid very small amounts.

So why not use an eBay listing service such as You Sold It!? They take care of listing the item, product shipment after the sale, and the financial transaction. Companies such as these are in the business to make a profit. They do this by taking a percentage of the sale price as a commission. So you pay the eBay fess and the commission. Let's say you think you can sell that Lladro for $100.00 through the on line auction. Therefore, the listing service would get $20.00 is their commission is 20%. Ask yourself how much work you are willing to do to make $20.00. This translates to the quality of the listing you will get.

In addition to your motivation for selling, the value of your Lladro will influence your course of action. We'll begin to consider value in Part V.
